AITA for accidentally damaging my parents’ fly screen and not fixing it immediately?
When I found myself locked out of my house, I took a risky decision to climb through the window by removing a fly screen. Now, my parents are furious over the dent I caused, and they’ve turned my room upside down in their anger.
I’m a 20-year-old who locked myself out of my house while my parents were away. I made the decision to climb through my window, damaging the fly screen in the process, and now my parents view it as a major offense.
While home alone on a Sunday, I locked myself out just as I had plans to meet a friend for dinner. My parents were out of state and wouldn’t be back for 90 minutes, so I opted for the risky move of removing my fly screen to climb back inside. I managed to get in but left the screen slightly dented.
"I thought I could fix the fly screen later, but I underestimated my parents' reaction."
When I got home past midnight, I found my room in disarray. My parents had emptied my closet and drawers, throwing my clothes around and expressing their anger over the mess I had created. My dad even texted about how I "broke their house" due to my "stupidity."
"They said I was selfish for not thinking about their property."
A few days have passed and I still haven’t had a proper conversation with them about what happened. My mom has been scolding me for damaging their property and explaining how this type of behavior wouldn’t be tolerated in a rental situation. It feels frustrating to be labeled as selfish when all I wanted was to get back inside.
🏠 The Aftermath
Currently, there’s a chill in the air at home. My parents remain upset about the damage to the fly screen, and discussions about it continue to surface.
I’m left to manage my own feelings of frustration while they focus on the property they believe I damaged. The relationship feels strained, and our communication is rocky after the incident.
The consequences include increased tension at home, and I feel like I can’t freely express my situation without adding more fuel to a fire I didn’t intend to start.
"I never meant to cause a rift, but the focus on the fly screen feels disproportionate to what actually happened."
I hoped that entering my house wouldn’t lead to such chaos, and it’s peculiar that a simple mistake spiraled into something so disruptive.
