My child's experience at their special...

AITA for trusting my daughter's school and finding out they hid her assault from me?

My 14-year-old daughter, who attends a special needs school, was violently assaulted, but the school kept it from me for hours and treated her horribly afterward. I’m struggling with the trauma, the school’s failure, and what comes next.

I’m the mother of a 14-year-old girl with schizophrenia attending a special needs private school. When she was brutally assaulted by a 17-year-old boy with ADHD on campus, the school covered it up and mishandled everything thereafter, leaving me to pick up the pieces and protect her.

My daughter is a seriously challenged teen who battles schizophrenia and is often grumpy because of it. She attends a costly private school specialized for children like her, where constant supervision is promised. But today, she was violently assaulted by an older boy in the bathroom. The school hid this from me, screaming at her for two hours and only contacting me after three hours had passed.

"I was brought into the principal's office; my daughter wasn't present, and I was told she was being expelled for being in the bathroom with a boy."

I had no idea about the assault until I was on my way with her to the hospital for a psychiatric stay. The hospital swiftly involved police and child protective services. Now she is in inpatient psychiatric care, away from school, and we’re still awaiting evaluation. The school’s neglect and silence have shattered our trust.

"The principal screamed at her for two hours, to the point another adult had to intervene."

My daughter is terrified, plagued by voices telling her the abuse was her fault and that people hate her. I hold her as she repeats what the principal said, unable to rationalize with her psychosis. She refuses to ever go back to that school, and I’m fighting to protect her mental health and seek justice.

🏠 The Aftermath

My daughter is now admitted to a pediatric psychiatric unit where she will stay as long as she needs. Visiting hours are limited, making this heartbreak even harder.

The school faces police and child protection investigations, and I am looking into attorneys. Despite the high cost of this private school, I’m hoping for a refund because of their failures.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to support not only my daughter but also my 16-year-old, who struggles with mental health issues of her own. It’s a lot to bear as a parent.

"The hospital immediately called the police and got child protection involved. Hopefully, they will arrest the boy so this doesn't happen to another child."

The response from healthcare and authorities has been compassionate and prompt, providing a glimmer of hope during this dark time.
